Karpathy, $1.45B in BTC, and a 60% Price Cut

Four moves that just reshaped where AI talent and crypto money flow, plus our holder-only app needs a name.

AI + Web3 intelligence for builders and creators

Issue #004  ·  June 1, 2026  ·  web3matters.xyz

This week: Karpathy walked from OpenAI to Anthropic, Google cut top-tier AI pricing by 60%, SpaceX revealed a $1.45B Bitcoin stash, and we revealed a token-gated holder hub built end-to-end by Hermes, that still doesn't have a name. There's a SHIP bounty for whoever names it.

Section 1 · Livestream Recap

We Stopped Asking AI to Build What We Said, We Asked It What We Should Build Instead

From Friday's "Revealing Something New" episode

Friday's stream had two beats: the news (Karpathy to Anthropic, Google's pricing grenade, SpaceX's Bitcoin reveal, Trump's Fed crypto EO) and the big one, Q unveiled the prototype of a token-gated everything-app for SHIP holders, built almost entirely by Hermes from a Telegram chat. The most interesting part wasn't the app. It was how it got designed.

Key takeaways from the stream:

Q didn't tell Hermes what to build. He told it who he was. Long conversation about what Web3 Matters is, what the shipyard community needs, what the hurdles have been, and what Q personally can and can't commit time to. Hermes came back with the recommendation, don't build for other people, build for yourself and your holders. Build the central hub. That's the prompt-design lesson worth stealing: context first, request second.

The whole prototype was built and fixed live via Telegram. Q showed a broken admin panel link on stream, screenshot-pasted it to Hermes in Telegram, and Hermes fixed the tunnel and returned a working URL within the live segment. No IDE, no terminal, no laptop required at the moment of the fix. This is what agentic vibe coding actually looks like in practice.

"I have zero time to code anything for anyone. So when I build, I'm doing it from a very specific place — maximally optimizing how much I can do in a short period of time. Go straight to the point. That's the main takeaway."— Q, on his vibe-coding approach

The Big Idea: Most vibe coders fail by treating AI like a contractor, handing it a spec and waiting for output. The Hermes workflow Q demonstrated this week flips that. Give the agent your full context first, who you are, what you've built, what's been working, what hasn't, what you can and can't commit time to, and then ask it what it recommends you build. The output isn't just a better feature set. It's a better strategy. The agent reframes your problem before solving it. That's the unlock that compounds across every project you ship after.

What to do: If you have an idea you've been sitting on, don't open a fresh chat and ask for the build. Open a long conversation with your agent of choice. Tell it your full context, constraints, audience, time budget, history. Ask it what you should build given all of that. Then build whatever it recommends. The reframe is the value.

Section 2 · The Week in AI & Crypto

Four Moves That Reshape Where the Money and Talent Flow

The stories worth tracking before next Friday

Andrej Karpathy Walked Across the Street to Anthropic

Tuesday, one line on X: "I've joined Anthropic." Started on the pre-training team this week. Karpathy is an OpenAI co-founder, ex-Tesla AI lead, and arguably the closest thing the field has to a rock star. He's the latest in a string: Ross Nordine from XAI joined Anthropic earlier this month, Nicholas Joseph (ex-OpenAI) runs the team Karpathy joined. Anthropic now sits at roughly $900B valuation and the talent direction is one-way.

Why You Care: If you bet your stack on Claude over the last 12 months, that bet just got reinforced. Pre-training is where next-generation model quality is decided. The team building the next Claude is now arguably the deepest bench in the industry.

Google Just Cut Top-Tier AI Pricing by 60%, and Scrapped Daily Limits

At Google I/O this week: AI Ultra dropped from $250 to $100/month. Daily prompt caps gone across every tier. Compute-based pricing (text cheap, video expensive, refreshes every five hours). 5× the Gemini usage of the $20 Pro tier. 20TB of cloud storage and YouTube Premium thrown in. Plus early access to Gemini Spark. A direct undercut of ChatGPT Pro ($200) and Claude Max.

Why You Care: If you're a solopreneur or indie hacker on a heavy-usage plan, do the math this week. If you're at $20/month, this barely affects you, but the response from Anthropic and OpenAI will, and it's probably coming within days.

SpaceX's S-1 Revealed a $1.45B Bitcoin Stash, More Than Tesla

SpaceX filed its S-1 with the SEC on Wednesday, paperwork for what's targeting the largest IPO in history at nearly $2T valuation, ticker SPCX, June listing. Buried in the filing: 19,000 BTC, bought for $661M in 2021, worth $1.45B at current prices. On-chain trackers had them pegged at 8,000 BTC, they had more than double. SpaceX now ranks among the top 10 corporate Bitcoin holders globally, ahead of Tesla and Coinbase.

Why You Care: The biggest IPO in history just put corporate Bitcoin treasury on the cover of every institutional investor briefing. The conversation about BTC as a balance-sheet asset just got compressed into a Q3 mandate for thousands of CFOs who weren't planning to think about it.

Trump Signed an EO That Could Plug Crypto Directly Into the Federal Reserve

Wednesday, while the SpaceX filing dominated headlines, Trump signed an EO mandating a 120-day Fed review of whether crypto companies should get direct access to Reserve Bank payment services, the same rails the biggest banks in America use. The Clarity Act is moving through the Senate with 100+ amendments; Warren is leading the resistance and stablecoin yield is the friction point. Senator Lummis is calling the latest compromise the culmination of months of work.

Why You Care: Coinbase, Circle, and Kraken stop being outsiders begging banks for accounts and become part of the system. Centralized exchanges win biggest. If you're a decentralization maxi, this is the signal to double down on self-custody and audit your reliance on CEX rails.

Section 3 · Project Spotlight

A Holder-Only Everything-App, Built End-to-End by Hermes, and It Still Needs a Name

First look at Web3 Matters' new token-gated hub for SHIP holders

Web3 Matters Holder App (unnamed, naming bounty open)

Token-gated central hub for SHIP holders: reports, prompts, mini-courses, alpha, gated by on-chain verification

Connect a wallet, verify your SHIP balance via Solana RPC, and unlock holder-only content. Each wallet gets a rank, a tier badge, and a deterministic "manifest role" generated from the address. The current prototype is read-only, no wallet connection required to check eligibility, just paste the address. An admin panel (for Trav and Q) lets the team upload new resources, reports, mini-courses, and prompt packs as they're built each week.

What you'll find inside (over time):

Weekly research drops. The packaged version of each Friday stream: bullet-point alpha, prompts, sources, and the deep-dive context that doesn't fit in the newsletter or the YouTube video.

Builder & creator playbooks. Trav is packaging his content workflow (Riverside clipping, SEO, multi-platform posting, YouTube growth strategy) into mini-courses for holders. Q is packaging the agentic build workflow that produced this app.

Curated databases & alpha. The free databases, reports, and prompts that have been going out publicly will move behind the gate from here on. Existing free archive stays. New value goes to holders.

Built with: Hermes (primary build agent, controlled from Telegram), Solana RPC for wallet verification, deployed on Vercel. Trav and Q will run the full codebase through ShipGuard before any production launch.

🎁 Open Bounty

Name the App. Win SHIP.

The app needs a name. The team is opening it to the community, best submission wins a bag of SHIP tokens and eternal gratitude. Winner announced on next Friday's stream.

How to enter:
1. Drop your name idea as a reply to the Web3 Matters X post about this issue, or
2. Send a DM to @web3matters_xyz or @trav_sol with subject "App Name Bounty"
3. Submit before Friday's stream. One entry per person.

Section 4 · What to Watch

Next 7–14 Days

The holder app goes live next week. Naming bounty winner announced Friday, ShipGuard pass runs before launch, full deployment targeting before the next newsletter. If you hold SHIP, your access will be wallet-verified, make sure the wallet you intend to use is the one holding tokens.

Anthropic and OpenAI pricing response. Google just dropped a 60% price cut and scrapped daily limits at the top tier. Q's prediction: a counter-move from at least one of the big two within days, not weeks. Watch your inbox for plan changes if you're on Pro or Max.

YouTube milestone: 200th video. Web3 Matters is two videos away from 200 on YouTube and just crossed 55,000 views, most of that growth in the last 60 days. Next Friday's stream is the most likely candidate for record views. Subscribe if you haven't.

SPCX listing in June. The largest IPO in history with $1.45B of Bitcoin on the balance sheet. The roadshow is in motion. Expect mainstream media coverage of corporate BTC treasury to compress into the next 30 days.

The question worth sitting with this week: if you opened a long conversation with your favorite LLM and told it everything about your work — what would it tell you to build that you haven't built yet?
