A Prototype Isn't a Product. Here's the Ladder Between Them — and the Tool That Climbs It for You.

The maturity model behind the ShipGuild app, and why Devin.ai changed how we ship

Anyone can prompt an app into existence now. Almost nobody ships a product, because the gap between "it runs on my machine" and "strangers use it every week" is where most vibe-coded projects die. This stream mapped that gap using the ShipGuild app as the live case study, and revealed the tool that carried it across.

First, the definition that changes your roadmap: a product is software with users, people who come back and use it recurrently, paid or free. No users? You have a hobby. (Nothing wrong with a hobby. Just don't confuse the two.)

The Product Maturity Ladder — where is your project, honestly?

0 · Mock An idea plus a sketch: a screenshot, a Figma frame, a napkin diagram. Tied to a specific problem you (or someone real) actually has.

1 · Prototype One long prompt: something deployed (Vercel is fine). It works, roughly. This is where most vibe coders stop and call it done.

2 · Alpha Deployed for yourself and friends to actually use. You learn what deployment really involves, and where it breaks.

3 · Private Beta A small outside group tests it. Feedback loop opens. Security gets its first serious pass.

4 · Public Beta Anyone can use it. You're tracking recurring engagement with specific features. ← ShipGuild lives here, edging into production.

 Real users, recurring usage you can measure, and (eventually) monetization. A product.

The practical takeaways:

Start from a problem you personally have, you'll survive the boring middle. ShipGuild exists because Trav and Q had a real problem: years of research scattered across links with no home, and holders with nothing to unlock. Alignment with your own problem is what keeps you iterating when the dopamine runs out.

Devin.ai is the most underrated tool in the vibe-coding stack. Q's verdict after taking ShipGuild from Vercel prototype to production with it: "the best AI tool I have ever used for full-stack software development." It's an AI software engineer, you prompt it, and it writes the code, tests it (recording its own test sessions on video), fixes bugs, opens PRs, and ships to production via your GitHub and Vercel credentials.

Crypto app security has tiers, budget accordingly. For a read-only or wallet-connect app (no funds leaving wallets), AI-driven security audits, checklist, simulated attacks, fixes, are genuinely workable. The moment funds move or stake, the bar jumps: human experts plus AI, multiple passes. Q's middle path if you can't afford a full audit yet: cap the exposure (e.g., limit stakes to small amounts) until you can.

Before you build a tool, document the workflow it replaces. Trav wants a clipping app to automate his most time-consuming task (30–60 minutes per clip). Q's advice: don't open a prompt yet, write down every step of the manual process first, with full context. The spec is the documentation of your own workflow. Cheaper still: check whether existing agent surfaces (Claude's browser extension driving Riverside, Cowork integrations) solve it before you build anything.

The end-state is feedback-driven autopilot. Q's next move: remove himself from the loop. Users submit feedback → an AI filters it against project goals → the filtered spec goes to Devin → Devin ships. Humans stay as decision-makers and approval gates, not operators. That's the actual meaning of "building a product with AI" in 2026.
